TRANSMOGRIFIED |
Since October of 1997, Beezwax Records has
been quietly and slowly building a reputation for remarkable quality in
brass, jazz, and blues; a level of quality that won¡¯t let the quest for growth hamper
the groove. To that end, Beezwax was born with a peculiar, built-in
safeguard against that kind of success: each and every Beezwax CD is hand-stamped with a serial number,
date-stamped according to the day it was assembled, embossed, personalized
with the CD owner¡¯s name (whenever possible), hand assembled, and
registered into a database that began on October 31, 1997: The day
Uncle Art, "Transmogrified" launched.
While this does allow Beezwax to maintain a very complete database of
customers, it also serves a larger purpose: to remind both label and
listener that the most important part of the equation is the music.
Call it crazy or call it brilliant, the Beezwax Records approach
ensures that everyone who is touched by the music knows that they are
listening to a work of art, made in the traditional manner, just as the
label¡¯s slogan says: ¡°One of a kind . . . . One at a time.¡±
"Beezwax . . . . It's almost a subversive statement about the distinction
between tiny indie labels and the mega-corporate products."
-Josef Woodard, L.A. Times
